Over last year we have been involved in a research project to set-up a financial sustainable compost method using urine and feces in combination with organic waste.
Out of a number of different composting methods a method was selected resulting in 100% hygienic high grade compost. The products can be easily sold on the marketplace for agricultural usage. In doing so a financial sustainable company can be built. One of the innovative aspects of the method applied is that we are also able to process highly liquid fecal sludge delivered from schools latrines in the area.
At present composting boxes are filled with source material based on different recipes. The first result are promising: compost is being formed, the temperatures in the boxes becomes so high that bacteria, viruses and worms are immediately killed.
The applied methods are simple and can be easily scaled up. Given that experience we are now considering scaling up the present composting method to build real life compost farms.
