Sanitation: Innovative Latrine Bag prevents seepage to groundwater
For the Aqua Limpa project in Xai Xai, Mozambique we recently developed a new tool preventing latrines from polluting the groundwater table: The Dutch Latrine Bag (DLB).

Sustainable business model
Apart for preventing the groundwater becoming seriously polluted as a result of the seepage of excrement, the Dutch Latrine Bag also delivers the opportunity to close the nutrient cycle effectively. It enables to transform human excrements into valuable nutrients so they can be applied agricultural purposes.
In Mozambique there is a large need for nutrients given the poor condition of the sandy subsoil. The Dutch Latrine Bag is a small but essential step in closing the nutrient cycle. Next, a sustainable business model will be initiated inviting local entrepreneurs will to join and transform the human ‘waste’ into valuable nutrient rich compost and sell it on the marketplace.
